Freedom

“You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love” (Galatians 5:13).

The apostle Paul wrote those words in the first century to believers to proclaim that they have been set free from the law. Rather than being under the burden of the law, in Christ they have been set free. We really don’t appreciate freedom unless we’ve first been held in bondage. Whether it’s bondage to sin, the law, tyranny, oppression, addiction, etc., the experience of genuine freedom is unlike any other. But unencumbered freedom does not mean we are without restraint and obligation. Freedom is granted to us for the purpose of serving others in love.

The 4th of July is all about freedom, and I believe if the apostle Paul (who knew what it was to be imprisoned as well as what it was to experience freedom) had opportunity to speak to us Americans, he might say to us to use the unprecedented freedom we have as a nation to not only look to our own national and personal interests, but to the interests of others. To whom much is given, much is required, and we’ve been given unparalleled freedom. Precisely what we do (or don't do) with this freedom speaks volumes as to just how free we truly are.

By the way, our church is having a unique 4th of July worship celebration and BBQ picnic on Sunday, July 4 at Jasper State Park @ 11:00 am. Our entire worship team will be leading us in outdoor worship as we celebrate this special Lord’s Day in one of the most beautiful settings in our area. We would love to have you join us!  Pack a picnic lunch and come be with friends! Have a great 4th of July weekend!
